A cosmopolitan island of Sporades picturesque, teeming with pine trees, with small churches and historic monasteries, island with the many narrow streets, the vivid night life, the island of the famous writer Alexandros Papadiamantis.
It is worth visiting:
√ The town of Skiathos, the capital of the island, with a touristic infrastructure, for sure, restaurants with gourmet dishes, a great many traditional taverns, cafeterias, bars, clothes shop works or art souvenirs, hand-made jewelry, local products.
√ The house of Alexandros Papadiamantis.
√ Bourtzi. It is a nice place with a pinewood, ideal for a night walk or a drink, breakfast in a special café with an outstanding view. In addition, one can find a cultural centre and a summer theatre; in the latter, during the summer period, concerts and theatrical performances take place.
√ The Holy Convent of Virgin Kounistra. According to the tradition, here in 1650 was found an old wonder icon of the Virgin. The icon was found hung on a pine shifting. Nowadays, the icon is kept in Aghia Triada (The Holy Trinity) in the centre of Skiathos.
√ The Holy Monastery of Virgin Mary or the Monastery of Virgin Evangelist. It is placed in an all green area, Karaflytzanakia. It is a male monastery. In the Monastery of Virgin Evangelist a great number of holy relics are kept, icons, the Holy Relics of the Saints, a handwritten Gospel of gold and silver, as well as precious stones of rare art of 1539, two more Gospels of 1758 and others. There is also a museum of unique clerical ancient things, books and manuscripts. In 1807, the first Greek flag was created and raised with the white Cross in the middle, against a light blue ground.
√ The Monastery of Virgin Kechria of the 18th.
√ The fabulous islands Skopelos and Alonnisos nearby.
Beaches:
The island is proud of its beaches. It is worth visiting:
√ The fabulous beach of Koukounaries, also known as the “Golden Sand”. It is regarded the 3rd best in the Mediterranean, a blue flag prize-winning beach. Very well organized, with beach bars, taverns, mini markets, sea sports. The trees almost touch the sea, endowing us with a natural shadow. In the forest, a rare aquatic biotope, the Lagoon of Strofylia is found. It is a protected area, today.
√ "Lalaria" is another “must” beach for every visitor of the island. It is one of the most advertized beaches of Greece, to which one can have access only by boat. It is well striking found on the northeast coast of the island. The rare beach with the wild natural beauty, the huge stone with the celebrated hole in the middle, the striking rocks, the perfectly round white pebbles, “Lalaria”, which cover the whole beach, and the deep-green waters.
√ “Big Sand”, which gathers a great many people, next to the town. An organized beach with taverns and ouzo corners.
√ “Maratha”, a quiet, nice beach hidden in the pine trees. Also a blue-flag prize winner.
√ “Banana”, a favourite organized beach, a pole of attraction for the youth. The most memorable parties are thrown here; the fans of the sea sports have a terrific time here, as well.
√ If you have missed the quietude and the silence, visit the beaches found on the west coast of the island “Kechria”, “Asselinos”, “Mandraki”.
